How does a trade of .com or a .net domain go?
With a trade you can transfer the domain to a new owner and registrar in one action.
If the new domain holder wants to keep the domain at the current registrar this is how to get started:
- Give the contact info of the new domain holder to the current registrar.
- An e-mail will be sent to the current domainholder to confirm the trade. After the confirmation, the new owner will also receive a mail to verify his information in order to finish the trade.
In case the new domain holder wants to transfer the domain to a new registrar, you can take the following steps:
- Control whether the current mail address is still valid. It is important to have access to the given e-mailaddress.
- Check whether the domain is locked. If the domain is locked, you will not be able to request a transfer for the domain. In case the domain is locked. You can simply requested the current party to unlock the domain for the transfer.
- Request the transfercode at the current registrar. You will receive the code by mail.
- Deliver the code to the new registrar. With that code, they can start the transfer from their end.
- Start the trade: the new registrat starts the trade request at ICANN, ICANN will check the transfercode. If it matches the corresponding code in their system, they will start the transfer.
A transfer of a .com, .net domain takes 5-7 days. Duren this period, the new domain holder will receive the mail to verify his/her contact info.
Watch out: If you get an e-mail to verify the contact info, it's important to respond to it as fast as possible. This way you'll avoid having your domain suspended. During the transfer de domain stays active like it has been before the transfer.
